On February 19th, teachers from both Jackson High School and King Middle School participated in professional development focusing the Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills. Teachers conducted a review of the ATL Plan, designed an ATL skill rubric, and horizontally aligned ATL skills for each grade level. In addition, teachers participated in an actual IB lesson that focused on inquiry, the learner profiles, and ATL skills implementation.

This is a great example of Co-Teaching and implementation of the Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL Skills) of IB at King Middle. This lesson focus on the implementing the ATL Skills throughout the lesson. Note how they continued to tie in the ATL Skill of Communication as they teach students how to identify the author’s purpose. The goal is to explicitly teach these skills to all students at all times.

The PRC is where you will find IB research, support materials, subject guides, and community chats. We establish the purpose of our fall unit by selecting One Key Concept + Two Related Concept + Global Context to write a Statement of Inquiry. Thank you to all the teachers who participated in the model IB MYP lesson on Tuesday September 26th, and to Ms. Jones, Ms. Pettway, and Ms. Curry for facilitating each session. During the model lesson, you participated in an inquiry base lesson in the content area of Mathematics, English Language Arts, or Social Studies. We demonstrated how the King Middle School Instructional framework aligns with the MYP instructional framework. The key focus of each lesson integrated authentic assessments/tasks, flexible grouping and differentiation, the Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning Skills, and student inquiry and reflection. Welcome back to a new year of blogging with International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Year Programme (MYP). We are now in our second year as an IB candidate school. We will continue our implementation of the IB Learner Profile (August learner profile is caring) and unit writing. In addition, we will implement two MYP units (one fall and one spring). The instructional coaches and I have aligned the classroom expectations and the instructional framework for King Middle and the MYP unit planner. Moving forward, there will be a series of professional development to help you write the units and to prepare you for implementing the units. The slide show below is the presentation from our meeting on last Wednesday. The presentation gives a brief overview of IB program, what is the MYP, and the benefits of the MYP. Teachers and other faculty need to model International Mindedness themselves. On my recent trip to Accra, Ghana, Mrs. Weaver and I partnered with the Al-Rayan International School in doing cultural exchange activities. Students sent each other items that tell a story about the community and culture. On March 6th, 2017, the two schools participated in a Skype to discuss the items. The students will continue to cultural exchange to find way to help build understanding and develop service projects. We will teach the topic and cover the standards. Please note, the State Standards (GSE) is the curriculum and provides rigor while IB is the framework that uses the inquiry based methodology. Teaching from the concept allows for transfer. In MYP, we embed the concepts in context (Global Context). Concepts are learned in the big picture. For example, It is not about the trail of tears, it is about migration. It is not about Congress, it is about government. What are some of your anxiety with this shift in pedagogy?
